Nautical Miles to Kilometers
Understand the real distance of navigation on the high seas.
1 milhas = 1,852 quilômetros
Statute Miles vs Nautical Miles
Contrary to what many think, a nautical mile is not the same thing as a mile on American highways. The nautical mile (abbreviated as NMI) was invented based on the curvature of the Earth (1 minute of a degree of latitude). That is why it is a bit larger:1 Nautical Mile equals 1,852 meters (1.85 km), while the terrestrial one has only 1,609 meters.
What is the 'Knot'?
If the boat captain says that the vessel is traveling at '30 Knots,' that means the boat's speed is '30 Nautical Miles per Hour.' Multiplying 30 by the factor of 1.85, we find that the boat is tearing through the waters at 55 km/h.
