What is the Median and how to calculate it?

In statistics, theMedianIt is the numerical value that separates the larger half of a data sample from the smaller half. Unlike the mean (which adds everything up and divides), the median focuses on finding the exact 'balance point' in the middle of the line.

Why is the Median important?

The median is extremely useful when there are outlier values in your list. For example: if in a room of 5 people, 4 earn R$ 2,000 and 1 earns R$ 50,000, the average salary will be very high and unrealistic. The median, on the other hand, will indicate R$ 2,000, reflecting much better the reality of that room.

• Deals with odd lists:If you entered 5 numbers, it takes exactly the third one (the middle one).
• Handles even lists:If you entered 6 numbers, there is not 'one' number in the middle, there are two. The tool adds those two in the middle and calculates their average for you.
