What is the Square Root?
A square rootof a number is the value that, when multiplied by itself (squared), results in the original number. It is exactly the opposite of exponentiation (squared).
Simple Example:
The square root of 25 is 5. Why? Because 5 × 5 = 25. Similarly, the square root of 81 is 9, since 9 × 9 = 81. Numbers that have perfect (integer) square roots are called \"perfect squares.\"
However, finding the square root of random numbers like \"147\" in your head is practically impossible, because the result will be a number full of decimal places. Use our calculator to find the exact answer in fractions of a second.
